Why We Are:
This week Ben Williams came to speak to us about why we are. We started off by defining what a world view is. Holistic approach to life, rooted in a set of basic beliefs that you have, whether you know it or not, that determines your view of and for the world. The of in that sentence is the explanation and the for is the application. I really loved this from the beginning because I love definitions are English class so so much. We then discussed where basic beliefs come from. Their origin, identity, meaning, morality, and destiny. Origin being where did it come from? Identity being what is a human being and who am I? Meaning is what is the purpose of life? Morality being who gets to decide what is right and what is wrong? And last, destiny meaning what happens when you die? I really liked when Ben started to talk about naturalism and Charles Darwin, which lead to the discussion of the Big Bang. The singularity. Where did that singularity come from? Matter could not be created or destroyed, only changed. It was really cool to make your mind go and start thinking about what you really believe. Do you believe in naturalism? The common answers. Nihilism? That life has no meaning. Existentialism? I must make meaning in my life, since there is no meaning in life. Hedonism? Life is about please. Humanism? Life is about making the world better for humans. All of these seem like appealing things, but in reality, life is about furthering the Kingdom of God. Not any of these other things. I loved making sure of what I believe this week and knowing why we are? We are because Christ made us to be.
